The U.S. Department of Commerce recently announced that real U.S. travel and tourism output (adjusted for changes in price) increased at an annual rate of 4.6 percent in the fourth quarter of 2011, following an increase of 0.6 percent (revised) in the third quarter of 2011. Forecasts Predict Strong Growth of International Travelers to the United States Through 2016
International visitor arrivals to the United States are expected to grow by 5 to 6 percent annually during the next five years. The U.S. Department of Commerce today released its fall travel and tourism forecast and projects a record 64 million international travelers to spend $152 billion during their stays in 2011, an increase of 13 percent from 2010.

In April 2011, increases were registered in seven of the nine overseas regions, with declines of four percent in Asia and one percent in the Caribbean. The Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) reports optimism for the Mexico market.
The latest figures from the CTC for December 2010 showed a 27% year-on-year boost in visitor numbers. Working with Air Canada, the CTC is executing a spring campaign to encourage Mexican travellers to visit Canada with special deals and new direct flights from Mexico City to Montréal, QC, Toronto, ON, and Vancouver, BC. TripAdvisor recently released its results for its annual travel trends survey of more than 3,000 U.S. travelers.
The report states that U.S. travelers are eager to pack their bags in the coming year with 36 percent planning to spend more on leisure travel in 2011 than this year. 42 percent of people surveyed expect to spend the same amount. Ninety percent plan to take two or more leisure trips next year — a slight increase on the 89 percent who said they have done so in 2010.

Foreign spending was up 0.4%, reaching $2.4 billion from January to March this year.
