Every great audio tour experience starts with a great script. If you’re planning to invest in audio tours, we recommend that you hire a writer that has the expertise and the experience to write an engaging and entertaining audio tour script.

Naturally, a writer has to be a great storyteller, but he or she will also be writing for the ear. We have seen noble efforts in script writing, but writers who do not have experience writing for the ear write for the eyes. This is akin to writing short stories, books, and articles. This kind of writing often does not work well in a sound production studio. Writing for the ear means creating a more personal experience - with clarity, shorter sentences, smaller words and a conversational approach to storytelling for the audio form.

Experienced audio script writers write with a soundscape in mind – (music and sound effects) – and will often identify soundscapes and music backgrounds that will enhance an audio tour experience, adding other sensory dimensions to the narrative in the script.

In some cases, we’ve found that some organizations view script writing as an opportunity to cut costs and they decide to write the script themselves. In many of these cases, this is managed internally. They:

  • Ask a staff member to write the script
  • Take a collaborative approach to script writing by getting several staff members involved in the process of script writing
  • Hire a writer who typically writes for the eyes and not the ears
Next, significant investments are made in sound production. While this approach seems like it should work, quite often – it doesn’t. Even if the scripts sound good on paper – it’s completely different when the script is in front of professional voice talents, narrators, and actors.

If you’re considering audio tours, we recommend making the investment in a professional writer who has a portfolio of sound productions, a writer that is well versed in writing for the ear (and for all of the senses). This will make all the difference between a good audio tour and a great one.
